Originally from Michigan and the abundance of fresh water and fish of the Great Lakes, I was very curious to learn about the many issues surrounding water in California. As a trained scientist, my curiousity aroused, I began to read into the facts and the data, then realized we are in a far worse situation than I ever expected. The majority of rivers tested in California are impaired. Toxic Release Inventories indicate millions of tons of pollution generated yearly and dumped into the environment through industrial practices. Agricultural runoff of pesticides and toxic chemicals destroying fish and bird populations. The honey bee is in danger of becoming extinct and industrial GMO monocultures are expediting the process. The agricultural issues surrounding the Sacramento Delta and the removal of water from the delta before bringing it down to the desert that is Southern California. After using 20% of the electricity in California to transport the water hundreds of miles, we use it once and then treat it to advanced primary and then dump it in the ocean. We could advocate rainwater catchment (ancient technology used worldwide) to provide alternate sources of water. Grey water reuse provides opportunities to catch your shower water and use it for your toilet. Take your washing machine and water your properly landscaped lawn to help trap runoff.
