Water Quality Objectives for Chemical, Nutrient, Bacteria

and Toxicity Parameters by San Diego Coastkeeper


These are the limits used by regulatory agencies to show water quality impairment.

Water Quality Indicators

pH: < 6.5 or > 8.5

Dissolved Oxygen: < 5.0 mg/L

Total Phosphorous: PO4-P > 0.1 mg/L

Nitrate: NO3-N > 1 mg/L or N:P ratio > 10:1

Ammonia: NH3-N > 0.025 mg/L

E. coli: > 406 per 100 mL

Enterococci: > 108 per 100 mL

Toxicity: BIN >= 4
